Laser Cutting for Everyone
Laser Cutting for Everyone
Are you interested in making things? A wooden keychain or lamp as a gift for a loved one? A prototype for your new product idea? A 3D art piece, an acrylic necklace or an engraved leather wallet? In this course, you will learn how to use a laser cutter to transform your creative ideas into reality.
We will start by learning how to use the 2D design software ”Inkscape”. Then, you will get introduced to the laser cutter and learn how to operate the machine by yourself. Each student will design and make their own custom objects. The weeks will be divided by themes such as ”create something for your community” or ”repair something using laser-cut parts”. During the course, you can explore artistic, technical, or other applications of laser cutting.
You will first learn to design, cut, and engrave 2D objects like keychains or jewelry. In the later weeks, we will move on to 3D objects like boxes, toys, model houses, or himmeli. You will have the chance to work with a variety of materials like wood, leather, felt or acrylic.
You don’t have to have any experience with laser cutting or 2D design software to join. Both beginner and advanced students are welcome to attend the course.
After this course, you will be able to:
•Use 2D design software (Inkscape) to create custom designs
•Design and make 2D/ 3D objects by laser cutting and engraving
•Operate a laser cutter on your own (Laser cutters are available at public libraries)
•Laser cut and engrave a variety of materials including wood, leather, felt and acrylic
We have computers at the Makerspace, so you don’t need to bring your own. The software you will learn is open-source and free. You can download it on your own computer and work on your projects at home.
