Laser and Vinyl Cutting for Everyone

Are you interested in making things by yourself? A wooden keychain or a leather wallet for a loved one? A birdhouse for your neighborhood? Custom printed t-shirts for your local sports club, or tote bags for your art collective? In this course, you will learn how to use laser and vinyl cutting to transform your creative ideas into reality.

The course is structured around learning to use two machines: the laser cutter and the vinyl cutter. The laser can cut and engrave materials like wood, acrylic, and cardboard. The vinyl cutter can print and cut stickers that can also be transferred to fabrics. You will learn how to use the free software “Inkscape” to create designs that can be produced by both machines.

Every week we will be learning a new feature of the software, and new techniques for both machines. The weeks are divided by “project themes”, such as “make something for your community” or “repair/ reuse something”. You will be using these themes as guidelines to create your own projects during class. You can explore artistic, technical, or other applications of laser and vinyl cutting. The course has special emphasis on teaching how to use the machines independently. You will also have the chance to experiment with a variety of materials such as wood, leather, or felt.

You don’t have to have any experience with laser cutting, vinyl cutting, or 2D design software to join. Both beginner and advanced students are welcome to attend the course.

After this course, you will be able to:
-Use 2D design software (Inkscape) to create custom designs
– Design and make 2D and 3D objects by laser cutting or engraving
– Laser cut and engrave a variety of materials
– Design and make stickers/ custom garments by vinyl printing, cutting and heat pressing
– Operate a laser and vinyl cutter on your own (Both machines are available at public libraries)
